She’s an award-winning broadcast journalist and former TV news reporter who left it all to start a passion project that I believe is making the world a better place. Erica Mandy is leading a movement to enjoy staying informed. There is an emphasis on ‘enjoy’ there because news outlets are having a hard time right now. It makes us want to shut them out but then we’re left being uninvolved and uninformed.

How do we fix this? That’s where Erica Mandy comes in! She has started a way for us to stay up to date with all the important things going on in the world with her 10-minute daily podcast. Erica is the founder and the host of The Newsworthy, where she combines more than a decade of journalism experience with her own voice and style to produce what she calls ‘fast, fair and fun’ dailynews updates in less than 10 minutes.

This woman is awesome and I am so excited for you to listen today!

What we’re talking about

- What The Newsworthy is about

- Behind the scenes of the daily podcast creation

- Life before and the journey to entrepreneurship

What it’s about and why this is a necessary platform

“What I try to do with The Newsworthy is to not only make it easy by having all the news from all these different news sources in one place, but to also bring different perspectives from these news sources.”

It’s all the day’s news in less than 10 minutes, it’s fair and unbiased, and Erica tries to keep it friendly, upbeat and casual so that it’s easy to digest and it doesn’t give you all doom and gloom.

Behind the scenes

“Talking about consistency, I will just add that it is something else to do a show every week day that cannot be batched, cannot be done in advance, because it’s current events.”

Erica scours the internet, looking up all different types of news sources. She then brings them together using her journalism skills and writes the story in a way which is much simpler, records, edits and publishes it by 1am in the morning. She does all of this Sunday through Thursday night!

Life before The Newsworthy and the journey to entrepreneurship

“Let me not get distracted by what will make me happy in the short-term, let me think about my long-term goal here.”

Erica went to school for journalism, got her first job in a small town in Missouri as a part time reporter and worked her way up. She landed up in Los Angeles working for CBS LA. For 10 years Erica did this and only in the last couple of years she kept hearing that people were tuning out TV news because it was too depressing, boring and overwhelming.

She felt that she needed something that she could listen to during her commute or doing her makeup and this is how the idea started to brew. Erica couldn’t start this as a side hustle as she was still on contract with CBS. So just to be certain that she was onto a sure things, she ran a survey and created a 2-minute version of what she had in mind, got positive feedback and ran with it!

Thank you so much to joining today, I’m over the moon grateful to have you as part of this
